The most common form of stump removal is with a stump grinder. A specialist heavy duty machine is used to grind tree stumps down and below the surface of the earth to below grade so it is out of the way. The amount of stump below the surface is usually a lot more than people expect it to be. Once all of the grinding has been done, the back filling of the stump begins where the woody material and stump grindings are pushed back into the hole to fill it. All of the material is left on site with the new back-filled hole somewhat larger than the original diameter of the tree stump that was ground.
Once this process is complete you can plant a new tree in the same area. If grass is going to be used to take over the area, a fertile bed can be made for the grass to grow and some of the material may need to be removed from the area.
